Research Assignment Taking A Knee Or Saluting The Flag - 1100 Words

Research Assignment Taking A Knee Or Saluting The Flag (Research Paper Sample) Content: TitleProfessorDateTaking a knee or saluting the flagAbstractIn the United States of America, taking a knee has always been considered as a sign of protest. Since back in the days, it was believed that one of the ways of fighting the social injustice in the united states was through refusing to salute and stand for the national anthem. However, the questions such as Why the national anthem and the American flag was used as a focal point for protest out of all things. When social injustice and abuse are put into perspective, the correct reasoning would be to respect the National anthem and flag, but in contrast, the members of the NFL team protest. The thought of political abuse also takes the subject to the elite members of the government in politics stripping off the rights of people and handing them over to bureaucrats. When problems are discovered, a proper research should be conducted to find the actual cause and the source of the problem. However, research shows t hat conservatives and liberals have a different way of thinking. According to conservatives, they believe that the United States of America is perfect. On the other hand, Liberals think that the origination of the social injustice is firmly woven into the very fabric of the United States. As a result, liberals are more inclined to strategizing patriotism. Therefore, it is thus believed that when sports players take a knee during the National Anthem is a sign of intentional protesting against America.Patriotism, Protesting, social injustice, oppression, police brutalityIntroductionWhy is the protest a part of sporting events?Recently, in response to trumps continual critism over the demonstrations by athletes, over 200 members of NFL players chose to either sit or kneel during the playing of the national anthem before the start of the football games. Research shows that the peaceful demonstration was not a new practice in Sports was not a new thing in America but rather old. Also the movement dint only start with the former quarterback by the name Colin Kaepernicks who decided to kneel to make a statement to the world about the hypocrisy of America which fails to practice what it preaches. The recent protest is the latest since back in the history of America's making of a public statement in the name of patriotism and civil rights (Gandelman, Joe Moderate, 2017, p9). This paper shall discuss some of the critical questions that led the players of NFL to the latest resistance act during the playing of the national anthem. In the past century, one of the leading features of a sporting event is the patriotic song. During the stretch of the 17th inning of the first game between the Cubs and the Red Sox the 5/9/1918, Navy sailor of the US furloughed, and the third baseman of the Red Sox sang the military anthem although not as the official national song is sung. Because his rendition took place at a time when soldiers were abroad in a battlefield in the world war 1, vast majorities were moved. As a result of the positive response by the crowd, the song was later incorporated in America's sporting events (Benson, 2017, p12). It then became a permanent feature for football games and other sports during the wake of world war two.Was the NFL players strategy to use kneeling as a protest the first in history?Since ages ago, Kneeling has been used as a form of both prayer and political activism. For instance, since 1965 in a photo of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. some other activists of civil rights knelt in worship Selma in the name of Ala (Gandelman, Joe Moderate, 2017, 15). The demonstrators protested against the arrest of over 250 civil rights activists on a march and were later taken to the courthouse in Alabama to help with the release of their fellow African-American registered voters.Have the football or NFL players protested before? As per the research findings this is not the first protest by the footballers. For instance, a week earlier be fore all-star games for the American football in New Orleans, a group of black- American professional players of precisely 21 refused. According to the demonstrators, the discrimination they experienced made it difficult for them the players to enjoy themselves during the weeks leading to the games (American, 2017, 14). One of the former leaders of the Oakland Raiders let Daniels recalled the act of prejudice while he and his fellows experienced form hanging up a coat hailing a cab while trying to do everything. What about other sports?Research shows that a significant majority of athletes in different fields helped in the creation of the protest of the National Anthem in 2017. At least the famous 2017 demonstration by the NFL shows the possibility of long-term effects after the end of the march. The renowned boxer and devoted Muslim Muhammed Ali who is not only famous for his world championship in the heavyweight but also for his three times refusal to be enlisted in the Vietnam dra ft with the argument that, "Koran teaches against the war." However, in today's cover stories, Ali is characterized as a tale of caution as he suffered the "consequences of sticking his neck out," through his drafted evasion conviction (American, 2017, 14). Ali suffered the consequence of being stripped of his titles and boxing license 1964 heavyweight crown he won by defeating Sonny Liston. Despite the Supreme courts reverse ruling on Ali's conviction, the example remained as one of the best examples of high stakes of protest), (American, 2017, 16). Also of today's report on NFL season, Kaepernick remains unsigned three weeks to the march. The perspective is easily lostSince the start of the knee in the year 2016, vast majorities view this as the form of disrespect of the for the United States of America. Neverthele...

Tracing Changes in Pythagoras Speech in Ovids...

Tracing Changes in Pythagoras Speech in Ovids Metamorphoses Change in Ovid, as well as in life, seems to be the only constant. Change is the subject of the Metamorphoses and Ovids purpose in recounting myths is established from the very beginning: My intention is to tell of bodies changed to different forms... with a poem that runs from the worlds beginning to our own days (1.1-4). From this foundation, Ovid launches into his stories, using metamorphosis more as a vehicle for telling his stories than as an actual subject matter. Although he retells religious myths, Ovid is not writing a religious manuscript. Rather, the product is a work of literature. Ovid is conscious that he is writing literature, not religion, and†¦show more content†¦By contrast, Ovids motives in narrating myths in the Metamorphoses are rarely ulterior. Most myths are free of the religious implications and the moralistic nuances that his Greek predecessors used as the backbone of their plays and poems. Instead, Ovid chooses to entertain his readership by his brilliant language and delight them with not only absorbing tales, but also with his masterful talent of weaving narratives together. Let us not be overzealous and label Ovid as an entertainer, for his themes and purpose change as quickly as the stories he narrates. Rather, it is safer to say that Ovid relieves his audience of any ulterior religious or moral meaning. Pythagoras, on the other hand, inveighs against his audience to refrain from meat eating, in some cases comparing them to cannibals like Thyestes and the Cyclops. Pythagoras neglects to give a reason for not eating meat, waiting almost a hundred lines to explain that the spirit comes and goes, is housed wherever it wills, shifts residence from beasts to men, from men to beasts (15.171-173). Our souls, Pythagoras claims, are deathless... when they leave our bodies, they find new dwelling-places (15.162-164). Pythagoras asserts that the spirit, or soul, is the same in men and animals since man can be reincarnated into beast and vice versa; therefore, eating an animal is equivalent to cannibalism. A contemporary of Pythagoras, Xenophanes, mocked this belief in the

Chance Meeting By Martin Lewis Essay Example For Students

Chance Meeting By Martin Lewis Essay Meeting is a dry point etching print by Martin Lewis and was created in the early 1930s. The subjects are two figures, male and female, who have happened upon each other in the setting of a public sidewalk at the entrance of a storefront. It may be a dichotomy in terms to call the piece, Idealized Urban Realism, though Lewis work does harmonize well with the Urban Realist movement surfacing in this period with artists such as Edward Hopper. It also has a very idealized and stylistic quality not unlike the work of artists like Roy Liechtenstein in a much later time period. At a glance, Chance Meeting is a simple work intended to tell a story with minimal detail and it is difficult to distinguish any definite pattern in the composition. With careful inspection however, the viewer can discover an order in the placement of objects, the existence of symmetry, and perhaps a much deeper meaning to the piece through the interpretation of symbolism. The palate used in the piece is simply black and white, with the exception of the illusion of shades of gray created with the shading technique, cross-hatching. This intensifies the use of light and shadow in what definitely could be called chiaroscuro. The presence of a single, intensely bright directional light creates areas of extreme contrast that could be called tenebrism. An extreme variety of lighting techniques can be found, as some objects are lit from the side, and others are almost completely backlit, creating more of a silhouette than a distinguishable three-dimensional shape. Shadows in the recesses of the male figures face starkly oppose highlights upon his brow and jaw line. Lewis seems to be experimenting with what might be realistic lighting conditions at night on a typical city street, and exaggerating the results in the interest of style. An area of focus is created in the foreground by the intensity of light falling off abruptly as distance increases. Balance in lighting is achieved with the occasional splash of light in a reflective surface, and the existence of smaller, less accentuated lights in the background of the print. The piece derives a lot of its realism from the textures on the surfaces of objects. The pavement has a pattern in it that it possibly the result of its cement tiles being cast in wooden molds, leaving behind the impression of the grain. Some of the tiles are cracked and stained, giving the effect of a partially worn and aged public sidewalk. The glass in one of the structures is evidently glossy as the reflections of street lamps and automobile headlights can be seen in its surface. Cloth in the canopies on the buildings and the clothing of the subjects is very naturally wrinkled in relaxed areas and creased where it is pulled taught. These more organic shapes and textures help to balance the strict geometry and texture of the almost completely architectural background. A variety of very accurately portrayed objects fill the space with interesting, yet not distracting detail. The signage in and around the shops is not only visible, but also legible. It is actually possible to read some of the signs. The book cart in front of the shop bears a hand drawn sign that appears to be a square of cardboard torn out of a box and is precariously seated at an off angle to its makeshift base. All of this meticulous attention to detail aids in creating a sense of realism in the print. In the prints era, these objects also probably served to create a sense of familiarity for the viewer, who was probably used to seeing similar signage and objects in the physical world. .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b , .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .postImageUrl , .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b , .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b:hover , .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b:visited , .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b:active { border:0!important; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b:active , .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud8406343bef7926ef50c28325a61db7b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Henri Matisse - La joie de vivre EssayIn retrospect, the antiquity of these artifacts adds a degree of interest to the scene and perhaps a bit of nostalgia for some. A sense of depth and space is created by the use of one point linear perspective. The orthogonals lead off of the picture plane to the left with the vanishing point out of sight by a considerable distance. Multiple lines that define the architecture widen to the right creating a fanlike pattern that draws the viewers attention to the subjects and the detail in the foreground of the print. A definition of order and balance surfaces when we begin to examine the shapes created by the long shadows cast by the light radiating from the window of the storefront. These shadows find their angles in their own sort of vanishing point located at the light source somewhere to the inside the building and out of sight. The placement of this light source almost mirrors the vanishing point on the opposing side. The overlapping of lines stemming from these two points creates a sort of diamond shape typically associated with two-point perspective. At this point we can see that several other objects in the scene also conform to this diamond shape. Draped lengths of cloth suspended from the canopies of the shops seem to lean into the upper inward sloping angle, While the subjects themselves fit into the geometry of the lower angles. The symmetry of these angles almost frames a point between the two main subjects, where in addition to a sign advertising newspapers, perhaps a sort of understood emotional magnetism is rooted. The subjects almost seem to be physically affected by the magnetism between them, and their bodies appear to be drawn toward each other. Lewis accomplishes this in a subtle way, and neither of the subjects appears to be unnaturally contorted. The male subject looks somewhat relaxed and is shifting his weight a bit into a stylized variation on the classical contrapposto pose. The female subject forces her hip out to one side and tilts her head a bit, posing in a way that might have been considered attractive for a young woman in the early 1930s in America. Their clothing is of some interest because in the absence of adequate lighting, we might not have a more reliable indication of age. Both figures are clothed in what was probably considered very casual clothing for the era. The female figures dress is somewhat shorter and more fitted than it would be if she were older and more conservative. The Male figures collar is unbuttoned and his sleeves and pant legs are rolled up. His hair appears to be somewhat disheveled. From these details we can assume that they were probably in their late teens or early 20s, as it would be frowned upon for people of older age to dress this way in this somewhat socially conservative era. In the background of the print, we see two additional figures, also a man and a woman. The two are standing very close to one and other, and appear to be engaged in an intimate conversation. From a literal perspective, one might draw the conclusion that this second couple represents the popularity of the concept of meeting ones mate and, falling in love. It might have been a musing of many Americans in this era that the streets of urban America were filled with young attractive teenagers, courting, dating, and preparing for marriage. From a more symbolic perspective, it is feasible that this second pair of figures actually represents the same couple we see in the foreground, now further down the road, or further along in time. The two are now engaged in the rituals of becoming more intimate. The road itself can be seen as a symbol of the path of fate for these two characters, as it vanishes off of the picture plane into the uncertainty of the future. Contradictory to most Urban Realist works, Chance meeting seems to present a rather idealized and innocent view of the era, yet aesthetically, it is a fairly realistic portrait of urban city life in Americas 1930s.

Pitfalls Of Relativism Essays (2294 words) - Relativism,

Pitfalls Of Relativism Pitfalls of Relativism The year was 1943. Hundreds of Jewish people were being marched into the gas chambers in accordance with Adolf Hitler's orders. In the two years that followed, millions of Jews were killed. Only a fraction survived the painful ordeals at the Nazi German prison camps. However, all of the chaos ended as World War II came to a close: the American and British soldiers had won and Hitler's Third Reich was no more. A certain ethical position would state that the anti-semantic Nazi German culture was neither right nor wrong in its actions. In fact, it is this view of the cultural relativist that assume all actions considered right in a culture to be good for that culture alone. Moreover, the relativist claims that these actions can not be judged according to their ethical correctness because there is no absolute standard by which they could be compared. In the above case, this position would not allow for the American and British soldiers to interfere with the Nazis; the relativist would claim that the Allies were wrong in fighting the Germans due to a cultural disagreement. In truth, it is the relativist position, which has both negative logical and practical consequences, and negligible benefits. The first logical consequence of relativism is that the believer must contradict himself in order to uphold his belief. The view states that all ethics are relative while putting forth the idea that no absolute standard of rightness exists. If this is the case, then what is cultural relativism relative to? From a purely logical point of view, this idea is absurd, for in assuming that something is relative one must first have some absolute by which it is judged. Let the reader consider this example to reinforce the point. A young woman is five feet tall, and her older friend is six feet tall. The younger female considers herself short because she looks at her friend and sees that her friend is taller than she is. It would be illogical to say that the first woman is short if she were the only female in existence; if this were the case then there would not be anyone for her to be relative to in height. However, this logical fallacy is what the relativist assumes by stating that there is no standard of rightness for relativity. Quite simply, the cultural relativist is stating that he is relative to an absolute, which he considers non-existent. Another logical error that the relativist makes lies in his Cultural Differences Argument (Rachels p.454). The premise of this argument is that different cultures have different moral codes (Rachels p.454). The conclusion that the relativist derives is that there is no objective 'truth' in morality, [and therefore] right and wrong are only matters of opinion [that] vary from culture to culture (Rachels p.454). The main logical problem with this argument is that the stated conclusion does not necessarily need to be the case if the premise is given. The premise states what different people believe to be true, and the conclusion jumps to the assumption that this belief must necessarily be the case. Let the reader consider this instance, which closely follows the form of the above given argument. Assume that there is a society that believes that sunning as much as possible in the nude can only benefit a person. Due to scientific study, it has been experimentally shown that overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer. Being in the American culture, people know this to be true and therefore would disagree with sunning too often. According to the relativist, since the two cultures disagree concerning the practice of sunning there is no objective truth about it. However, this is a faulty conclusion because empirical evidence shows that the first culture would be wrong in its beliefs. In truth, one cannot derive a substantive conclusion about a subject (morally) from the mere fact that people disagree about it (Rachel p.454). Having discussed the logical consequences of relativism, it is necessary to expound upon the effects of its practice. The first of these repercussions is that culture determines what is functionally right and wrong. This means that the individual has

Dorothea Dix and the Dangers of Citizenship essays The report I read was about Dorothea Dix, and her quest to help those who were mentally ill. This was during the Jacksonian period, 1820 through 1840, and the citizens were becoming unstable, and that it would cause a major problem for the future. The people of the Jacksonian period felt the need for housing and teaching though with this unstable disorder, insanity or mentally illness, and keep society from falling apart. Schools were emphasized more, to teach students to be orderly and obedient. New settings called asylums were created to provide order for those with disordered minds, but all these new ideas needed support and money to be accomplished, and many were ready for the challenge, like Dorothea Dix. Dorothea Dix would give hope to people in the Jacksonian period that if she could get the help from the states, then so could anyone else. She was born in Hampden, Maine, 1802, and didnt have a great youth, but it wouldnt stop her later on in life from accomplishing the goals of getting legislatures of the states to fund asylums. She didnt make a huge campaign for it, or have fundraisers, but personally went and talked to those she needed to talk to, to get the goal accomplished. Shed make trips around the states to gather information of how the mentally ill are being treated, and bring it to the legislatures, with explanations and ideas. Dixs work wouldnt go to waste, she wouldnt get the Presidents vote for the bill, but her dream wouldnt be forgotten because by the 20th century, her wish was granted, the Sheppard Towner Act of 1921 and the Social Security Act of 1921. I think the report about Dorothea Dixs determination is a great report because it shows that willpower will get you far, and if you dont accomplish your goal, you inspire others to go out and give their willpower. Shes a great role model for anyone to have. ...

Modern Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Modern Philosophy - Essay Example In philosophy, empiricism is generally a theory of knowledge emphasizing the role of experience, based on perceptual observations by the five senses. . such as sight, touch, hearing and smell. According to Hume, empiricism is a reduction of ideas to nothing more than fuzzy remembered images of actual perceptions that they regard freedom or self-determination both as real and as having important ontological implications, for soul or mind or divinity. John Locke is the father of true empiricism, which is nothing more than a denial of innate (or a priori) knowledge and philosophical rationalism (the belief that knowledge can be derived by reason alone without reference to the perceived world) and insistence that all knowledge is derived and based on conscious experience of the world. That the world we are conscious of is objectively real, and it is our conscious perception of that objectively real world and our reasoning about it, which is the only source of true knowledge. Locke's empiricism began and ended with Locke. Bishop Berkley and Hume immediately destroyed it, and "empiricism" after Locke devolved into extreme Skepticism and subjective Idealism. In the late eighteenth century Immanuel Kant set forth a groundbreaking philosophical system which claimed to bring unity to rationalism and empiricism. Rationalists believe there are innate ideas that are not found in experience. These ideas exist independently of any experience people may have. These ideas may in some way derive from the structure of the human mind, or they may exist independently of the mind. If they exist independently, they may be understood by a human mind once it reaches a necessary degree of sophistication. Empiricists who denied that there are concepts that exist prior to experience. For them, all knowledge is a product of human learning, based on human perception. Perception, however, may cause concern, since illusions, misunderstandings, and hallucinations prove that perception does not always depict the world as it really is. In Kant's view people certainly do have knowledge that is prior to experience, which is not devoid of cognitive significance. Kant has been justly recognized for creating a revolutionary synthesis between the absolute, but speculative certainties of the continental rationalism of his time (represented by Leibniz) and the practical approach of British empiricism (culminating with Hume) that ended up in universal skepticism. Kant's initial position was considerably closer to the continental rationalism of Leibniz and Wolff than to British empiricism. Both his background and his personal inclination caused him to search for absolute certainties rather than pragmatic solutions. It was Hume's skepticism merely served as a catalyst to make him realize how little certainty there could be in any metaphysical construct which described himself as a lover of metaphysics whose affection had not been reciprocated. Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen Essay

Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen - Essay Example the articles of the declaration embodied the absolute rights of an individual. Initially there was also a list of duties which every individual had to perform but after a while the people who framed the Declaration removed them from the list. The articles promise the individuals of freedom, their own piece of private property, social security and immunity from cruelty. The Declaration also promised freedom of speech and freedom of the media and press. The emphasis of the Declaration was on the equal treatment of all individuals and their independence. It stated that the law should be based on the citizens of the country and the officials should be answerable to them as well. The finances of the country should also be in the hand of the citizens. A number of articles of the Declaration were directed at the unfairness of the ancient regime and how it abused the rights and interests of the individuals. Liberalism in the 19th century was deeply affected by the Declaration of the Rights o f Man and Citizen. However the Declaration did not seem to have any provisions regarding women or slaves. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen helped in changing the government of France from monarchy- where only the queen and the king had all the power and the power passed down the generations and new leaders were not elected- to republic where all the citizens had basic rights and also the right to vote and elect their own leaders. The Declaration gave rights to citizens which were never granted anywhere in France before like equality, liberty and property. It also led to the constitution of the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen. The United States Declaration of Independence of 1176 had Thomas Jeffery as one of its main writers and at the time the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen was being drafted, he was present in France and was in contact with the authors of the

Ireland during World War I And the Role Britain Played Research Paper

Ireland during World War I And the Role Britain Played - Research Paper Example This essay stresses that after looking at the legislative measures passed during World War I and the events of Irish Revolution, it is evident that World War I was giving Britain too many problems. These developments ultimately gave the Irish people an opportunity to force Britain so that free Republic state of Ireland could be formed. This paper makes a conclusion that Britain followed a policy of sharp oppression in order to crush the rising. It was mainly fuelled by the belief that the rebels were acting with German connivance and help. However the execution of the revolutionaries by the government resulted in widespread public revulsion. This exacerbated the growing alienation of the Irish from the British administration. This in turn led to Irish popular support for the republican separatist movement Sinn Fein. Strong suppression of the Easter Rising by the British fueled popular support in Ireland for the Republican separatist movement Sinn FÃ ©in . It was due to this fact and the conscription crisis of 1918 that Sinn FÃ ©in was able to defeat the Redmondite nationalists in the general elections of December 1918 and won most of the seats. In short it can be said that the strong suppression of the rebellion alienated the British from the Irish. The political background of the Irish Revolution was set in the strong suppression of the rebellion by the United Kingdom. Strong suppression of the rebellion by the British Empire led to the fact that people of Ireland began to have sympathy for the revolutionaries and their agenda which led to the electoral victory of Sinn FÃ ©in.

Abstinence Only Sex Education Essay -- Sex Education

Where in the first world would one expect the teen pregnancy rate to be the highest? Surprisingly, it is the United States that has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any first world country, more than double the rate of twenty other first world countries and almost ten times greater than that of Switzerland. While some of the disparity can be attributed to factors such as income inequality, the presence of abstinence only education has a major impact on birth and STD rates in the United States in comparison to other countries with more comprehensive programs. It is clear that this difference in approaches has a significant effect, and the United States needs to act to ensure the health of its citizens. Urgent actions are necessary because abstinence only education is becoming more popular in the United States and more and more school districts are adopting it. Despite its popularity it has not been proven in any way to be effective in meeting its goals of reducing teen pregnancies and STDs. In fact, there is strong evidence and reasons for its ineffectiveness that should, when compared to the dearth of evidence showing any benefit, make it clear that this is not an effective approach. Not only is it ineffective however, it also results in harm to American teenagers and society by attempting to discourage sex by saying condoms are not safe, and this results in decreased contraception use and thus more STDs and pregnancies. And finally, when America and other first world countries with abstinence only curricula are compared to countries which have a more comprehensive methodology to teaching health, it is clear what is the more effective approach. Abstinence only curricula targeted at adolescents are both ineffective at meeting th... ...ent Education: Ine." bepress Legal Series . N.p., 2004. Web. 25 Apr 2012. Santelli, John, Mary Ott, et al. If Wishes Were Horses Essay

The first recognisable ancestor of the rhyme was recorded in William Camden’s (1551–1623) Remaines of a Greater Worke, Concerning Britaine, printed in 1605, which contained the lines: â€Å"If wishes were thrushes beggers would eat birds†. [2] The reference to horses was first in James Carmichael[disambiguation needed]’s Proverbs in Scots printed in 1628, which included the lines: â€Å"And if wishes were horses, pure [poor] men wald ride†. 2] The first mention of beggars is in John Ray’s Collection of English Proverbs in 1670, in the form â€Å"If wishes would bide, beggers would ride†. [2] The first versions with close to the modern wording was in James Kelly’s Scottish Proverbs, Collected and Arranged in 1721, with the wording â€Å"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride†. [2] The modern rhyme above was probably the combination of two of many versions and was collected by James Orchard Halliwell in the 1840s. 1] The last line was sometimes used to stop children from questioning and get to work: â€Å"If if’s and and’s were pots and pans, there’d surely be dishes to do. † In popular culture[edit] The phrase is misquoted in the 2002 television series Firefly in the series finale episode â€Å"Objects in Space† in which Adam Baldwin’s character Jayne Cobb gets upset and says â€Å"Yeah and if wishes were horses, we’d all be eating steak. Star Trek Deep Space Nine Season 1, Episode 16 was called, If Wishes Were Horses. In the episode entitled Things Fall Apart Season Six, Episode 21 of the television series The West Wing, Josh Lyman makes a reference to the poem while in conversation with a female campaign staffer who tells him that if media circumstances were different, their candidate, Matthew Santos, would have already locked up the Democratic party’s nomination for president. Josh responds by saying, â€Å"If wishes†¦ orses†¦ etc. â€Å" She erroneously attributes the quote to Bob Dylan by asking Josh â€Å"What is that from some Dylan song? Guys your age have this thing about Dylan. â€Å"[3] In September 2010, Alexandrea Mellen famously quipped, â€Å"If wishes were horses, then the horse market would collapse†. The phrase is used by the character Spike in the television series Angel. In addition, in the series finale, when another character wishes â€Å"to do more violence†, Spike replies that â€Å"wishes are horses today†.

The Events Of The Holocaust - 879 Words

Perhaps one of the greatest tragedies of morality in the modern world were those acts committed by Hitler’s regime in WWII. Wherein, several million people lost their lives, homes, careers, and rights. The largest of these people were the Jewish, but also people that Hitler deemed as subversives—homosexuals, disabled, etc. In the holocaust these people were systematically oppressed through a degradation of rights; murdered in gruesome methods; and enslaved for the duration of the war. It is of the utmost importance that we do not forget about this great tragedy. It is my hope that we can all remember those lost and learn the lessons of morality the holocaust taught us. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of the Holocaust was the leading events to the final imprisonment and extermination. These events allowed the German people to dehumanize Jews and subversives too such a point that they thought of them as nothing more than animals. This was a complete degradation of rights and respect. It is not easy to sum these events up as it follows a long timeline, however, there are a few critical events I will mention. At the end of WWI Germany was fully blamed and owed a lot of money in reparation. This eventually bankrupted Germany and caused a great amount of anger and hate to build. On Jan 30th, 1933 Hitler is appointed as chancellor of Germany and all hell begins to break loose (â€Å"Holocaust Timeline†).
